The Design/Build Process

The signature design for this single cable-stay bridge evolved from public input, engineering requirements, and the expertise of the world’s leading bridge and lighting designers.

The bridge footprint was determined to create minimal impacts to existing neighborhoods within the city of Charleston and to be sensitive to the enhancement of the public realm.

Through several public hearings, the local public chose the diamond tower design from other options.

Letters, testimony, and even a local bumper sticker campaign worked to add a pedestrian/bicycle component into the bridge design.

Local officials offered their insight to enhance interchange options with additional ramps to Morrison Drive in Charleston and Wingo Way in Mount Pleasant.

Local architects, city and town officials were enlisted to aid the bridge designers in refining the final design to reflect a local aesthetic, while staying within the available budget.
